Santa Ana High School was briefly placed on lockdown Thursday after a “concerning item” was reported inside a classroom, prompting an immediate response from Santa Ana Unified School District Police.

According to a message sent to families by school officials, the lockdown was initiated out of an abundance of caution while officers investigated the report.

District police officers responded to the campus and identified the students involved. Following their investigation, authorities determined that the item was a replica toy gun.

The lockdown was subsequently lifted, and normal school activities resumed.

School officials did not release the identities of the students involved or disclose whether disciplinary action would be taken, citing student privacy protections.

The school issued the following statement to families regarding the incident.

#### District Statement to SAHS Families

“Dear Santa Ana High School Families,

We want to share an update about an incident on campus today.

Earlier today, Santa Ana High School briefly went into lockdown out of an abundance of caution after a report of a concerning item in a classroom. Santa Ana Unified School District Police officers responded immediately and identified the students involved. Their investigation determined that the item was a replica toy gun.

The lockdown has since been lifted, and the school day has returned to normal. To protect student privacy, we cannot share names or disciplinary details.

We are grateful to our students and staff for following lockdown procedures and reporting any suspicious activities to our school staff. Thank you to our district police officers for their quick response. This is also a good moment to talk with your child about the importance of reporting anything that seems unsafe to a trusted adult. As always, see something, say something.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our school safe.”

School officials emphasized the importance of students immediately reporting suspicious or potentially dangerous items to school staff.

The district’s statement did not mention any injuries or indicate that there was an ongoing threat to campus safety.

It remains unclear what led to the initial discovery or report of the replica toy gun, how the item was brought onto campus, or whether any disciplinary measures will follow.

Recently, high school seniors across the nation have used water guns to participate in a game called “Senior Assassin.” It is unclear if that is what led to the incident.

*This is a developing story. Additional details may be released as they become available.*
