SAUSD finalizes layoffs for 262 certificated staff after legal review

(SAUSD HQ) — The Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education has formally voted to issue final layoff notices to 262 certificated employees, according to Resolution No. 24/25-3680 passed during the board's May 19 special meeting.
The layoffs follow the district’s January resolution to reduce or eliminate particular kinds of services (PKS) ahead of the 2025–2026 school year. The resolution cited declining enrollment and budgetary constraints as factors driving the cuts.
Employees were notified before March 15 and had the right to request a layoff hearing. Those who participated in hearings were referred to as “Respondents,” while others who did not request a hearing were classified as “non-Respondents.” Hearings were held April 14–18 before an administrative law judge.
Following the hearings, a couple dozen of staff were removed from the layoff list. The judge's proposed decision, received by the district on May 12, resulted in changes to who would be laid off. Specifically, the district agreed not to proceed with layoffs for several employees.
Ron Hacker, Associate Superintendent and Chief Business Official, confirmed to The Santanero on Monday that 262 is the most current number referenced in the resolution. This adjustment from "around 350" and 276, reflects legal rulings, assignment corrections, and errors identified during the hearing process.
The affected employees span roles including teachers (elementary and secondary), counselors (192- and 202-day contracts), instructional coaches, curriculum specialists, and Teachers on Special Assignment (TOSAs).
Final notices are to be delivered no later than May 22, 2025, as required by law.
