The Santa Ana Unified School District announced Thursday that a global “cybersecurity incident” involving Canvas provider Instructure is causing service interruptions for students and staff across hundreds of school districts, colleges and universities.

SAUSD technology officials said the issue is limited to Canvas and does not impact district systems or networks. The district added there is currently no indication that passwords have been compromised as officials continue working with Instructure to restore access.

“Dear SAUSD Community,

The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) is aware of a global cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the third-party provider of Canvas. As you know, Canvas is our learning management system used by students and educators to access course materials, communicate, and track academic progress.

Current Status

This incident is currently causing a service interruption affecting access to the Canvas platform. Please note the following:

  • System Security: The issue appears to be isolated to Canvas and does not involve or impact SAUSD's internal systems or networks
  • Passwords: Instructure has stated that, at this time, there is no indication that user passwords have been compromised.

Our Information Technology Department is actively monitoring the situation and is in direct communication with the vendor to resolve these issues and ensure a safe return to the platform. We have already taken immediate precautionary steps to protect the continued security of all SAUSD systems. Please be cautious and remain vigilant of potential phishing or scam emails that may claim to be related to this incident.

We will share updates as additional information becomes available from Instructure. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to resolve this matter.

Sincerely,

SAUSD Technology Services

Santa Ana Unified School District”
