2026 General Election: Frequently asked questions
Have questions about voting today? Here's what Santa Ana voters need to know about registration, identification, mail-in ballots, voting locations, and Election Day procedures.
Voting
What time do Vote Centers open and close?
All Orange County Vote Centers are open today from 7 AM - 8 PM. Find locations here.
Can I vote at any Vote Center?
Yes! Orange County voters can vote at any Vote Center throughout the county, regardless of where they live.
If I'm still in line after 8 PM, can I still vote?
Stay in line! If you are already in line when polls close at 8 PM, you are still entitled to vote.
I can't vote because I didn't register beforehand, right?
Not necessarily! California allows same-day voter registration. Visit a Vote Center to register and cast a conditional ballot. Your vote will count once the Registrar verifies your eligibility.
It's my first time voting. What do I need?
Most California voters do not need identification. However, certain first-time voters who registered online or by mail without providing identifying information may be asked to show ID.
I'm a newly naturalized citizen. Can I vote?
Yes, if you're eligible. Newly naturalized citizens who became citizens after the regular registration deadline may need to provide proof of citizenship when registering under special procedures.
What if my name is misspelled or missing from the voter registration list?
Ask a Vote Center worker for assistance. You may be offered a provisional ballot if your eligibility cannot immediately be confirmed. Your ballot will be counted once your eligibility is verified.
Mail-in ballots and dropboxes
I received a mail-in ballot. Can I still vote in person?
Yes! You can bring your mail-in ballot to a Vote Center or request assistance with voting in person. Election officials will verify that you haven't already voted.
Where can I drop off my completed ballot?
You can return your signed mail-in ballot at an official ballot drop box or any Vote Center in Orange County.
Can I mail my ballot on Election Day?
Yes! Your ballot must be postmarked by November 3 and received by November 10, 2026, to be eligible for counting. Make sure your return envelope is signed.
It is encouraged that voters drop off their ballots at a dropbox rather than with USPS due to recent changes at the Postal Service.
Can someone else return my ballot?
Yes. California allows you to authorize another person to return your ballot. Complete the required information on the ballot return envelope. The person returning it cannot receive compensation based on the number of ballots collected.
How do I know if my ballot was counted?
You can check your ballot status at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov or sign up for ballot tracking at wheresmyballot.sos.ca.gov.
Voting Rules & Restrictions
Can I wear political clothing or wave campaign signs outside a Vote Center?
California prohibits electioneering within 100 feet of a Vote Center entrance, curbside voting area, or ballot drop box.
This includes displaying campaign signs or clothing supporting or opposing candidates or measures appearing on the ballot.
Campaigning is generally permitted beyond the restricted area, provided it does not interfere with voting.
Can I take a picture of my completed ballot?
Yes. California generally permits voters to photograph their own completed ballots. However, photography must not interfere with voting or violate other election laws.
Can I bring my children into a Vote Center?
Yes! Children may accompany their parents or guardians while voting, provided they do not interfere with the voting process.
Can I receive assistance when voting?
Yes. Voters who need assistance because of a disability, language barrier, or other qualifying reason can request help from Vote Center workers or eligible individuals of their choice.
Election Results
When will election results be available?
The Orange County Registrar of Voters will begin releasing results after polls close at 8 PM.
Initial results typically include mail-in ballots processed before Election Day, followed by additional ballots counted throughout the night.
Many mail-in ballots returned early are included in the initial election night results. However, some ballots may require additional processing.
Why do election results change after Election Day?
Election officials continue counting eligible mail-in, provisional, and conditional registration ballots after polls close.
Close contests, particularly local City Council races, can change as additional ballots are counted.
When will we know who won?
Some races may be projected on election night. Close contests may take days or weeks to resolve.
News organizations may project winners before counting is complete, but these projections are not official results.
California counties must complete their official canvass and certify results within the legally required period.
Report Voting Problems
What if I see illegal campaigning or suspicious activity?
